Low River Water July, 2015

Still cool, gorgeous and green in a nearby river. A place to be during this drought.
Can you have a drought in a temperate rainforest?

Update July 3, 11 am:

Apparently the answer is yes. It’s official:

VICTORIA – Responding to dry conditions, the Government of B.C. has announced a Level 4 drought rating for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, and taken the additional action of suspending angling in streams and rivers throughout southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands due to ongoing low stream flows and warming water temperatures.

Even though there’s normally a lot more water in this river at this time of year, it’s still a great place to cool off on a hot day. There are interesting rocks to explore, some deep pools and some shady areas.

The view out my ‘office window’ on a recent photography excursion. This was serious work (sturdy tripod, high resolution sensor and top-notch optics). And while wasted on a website photo, the image has incredible detail which will be visible in print form.

Though you could do this trip from Salt Spring Island in a day, I chose to stay overnight. My truck was parked only 7 metres from the rapid pictured above and about 15 metres from the two below. In the middle photo, you get a sense of the thundering waterfall. So thundering that I decided to move the truck farther away so I could sleep at night!

The colours of this crystal clear mountain water just needed to be photographed.
