100 mile diet on Salt Spring

The hundred mile diet is alive and growing on Salt Spring. The Tuesday Food Market takes place until the end of October.

And this week all the fruit and veggies enjoyed nature’s free rinse.

That’s so cool that you are doing the 100 mile diet! It is quite fun and a challenge! Have you read Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? I was inspired and worn out by just reading all that they accomplished. I think that I would like to stick to buying locally, but not necessarily growing anything locally. LOL! – I love all of the scrumptious colors in this photo! – I remember that you have posted some awesome aerial photographs. I have a friend who wants me to take some aerial photographs of his business (a complex of buildings on three acres) and I was wondering if you have a lens that you prefer to use when doing aerials? Thanks for your help!

Hi Rachel. We’re pretty lucky here with local food production on the upswing.

    re: Aerial Lens
It’s one of the times I grab a zoom lens. Around here we fly 1000 to 3000 feet in a Beaver floatplane. The plane travels between 80 and 100 mph. You don’t want to stick the lens out the door! I find the 70-200 is a good choice. Sometimes a polarizer. At least 1/500 sec. Probably not that great an idea to change lenses up there (but I do).

Thanks, John! Yay! I was hoping to have an excuse to rent a 70-200. That is the lens that I have been salivating over for a long time! And thanks for the tip about a polarizer. I have never used one and I never would have thought of that. Thanks again! I’ll be able to share my shots after this “Christmas surprise” has been bestowed.

Just remember that the polarizer may reduce the light by up to about 1.5 stops. So you have to weigh that in your decision. Hope it goes well.
