These two photos were taken about 30 steps apart.
The top photo shows what has happened to the property on the northern boundary of Dunbabin Park and Trail. A large swath has been cleared and a road put in place (which I did not follow as it is private property) just beyond the pile of logs.
The bottom photo shows the beautiful temperate rainforest hiking trail that winds down to several walking bridges which cross the stream.
It’s unfortunate, but soon Salt Spring will not be the island that it was just a few short years ago. Luckily here there are myriad of trails like yours to hike. Your Park photos say it all.
Hi Paul, there’s truth in what you say. I think it’s probably mostly true with a few obvious developments. It’s a tricky thing, trying to regulate what people do with “their land”. One person commented today, “…The island needs the ability to regulate tree cutting and driveway creation that is part of the process of getting building permits and not outside that process.”
On the up side there’s been a huge amount of new dedicated parkland over the last ten years (Erskine, Maxwell, Burgoyne Bay etc). And new trails, and some of the hidden ocean access points are being opened up; all good stuff.
