Earth Day 2014

A Mount Maxwell trail on Salt Spring Island

What better way to spend Earth Day, or any day, than discovering a new (to us) loop trail on the slopes of Salt Spring’s Mount Maxwell?

The trail above quickly entered old growth territory and became even more magical. The summit surprised us as it was partially enveloped in cloud. Particularly to the west and north.

For a small island, Salt Spring has a lot of great vistas.

The loop looks very inviting. How does one find out more about it?

That’s a bit tricky as I’ve not seen maps with detailed information about all the trails. If you are on Salt Spring and your vehicle is compatible with the ‘road’ to the summit, here’s what we did:

      1. Drive the summit road to a point about 2km from the top. There’s a newish snake fence on your right, an ecological sign at the fence. It appears to be a viewpoint. There’s a few spots to park nearby.

      2. Walk back a short distance and take the trail to the right (we saw some orange markers, one had a ‘2’ on it. We took this trail to the top, staying right and any forks we came across.

      3. From the summit, follow the chain link fence down the mountain until the fence stops, continue on the trail along the viewpoints, eventually crossing small stream (in April) and ending at the snake fence area.

Some day, time permitting I want to explore that area some more. Then I’ll post better directions with photos. Like I did for the easy route up Mount Erskine.

Hmmmm. This still sounds hard to navigate, especially alone. I look forward to your next explorations and more detailed guidance on that magical trail. I’d be afraid I’d fall off the Mountain!

    Thanks. Tamar
