Fine Arts Signature Showcase

July 9, 2012

Two to Tango Bruce Pearson

Forty respected Salt Spring artists were invited to participate in the third Fine Arts Signature Showcase, held at ArtSpring. Each artist created a single new work for the show.

Bruce Pearson’s Malena above shows intricate detail in a sterling silver bracelet. The bracelet was displayed on a yellow cedar sculpture and housed in a glass container.

At the other end of the scale, gallery visitors contemplate this enormous combination piece by the Venters.

Shopping at the Mall

July 4, 2012

At Salt Spring's Blackburn Mall

This scene was captured at the little known Blackburn Mall. Previously a dump near Blackburn Lake, and now a ‘transfer station’ it’s also home of the Blackburn Mall. Stuff that’s just too good to throw away can be left at the ‘mall’. Another visitor might be browsing the mall and decide they can use the thing that you left. They make a donation and take it away.

And it wouldn’t be Salt Spring without a bit of art to be discovered around the edges. Love it!

The Canada Day festivities on Salt Spring once again included a huge and well attended car show. Lot and lots of classic cars all shiny on the outside and immaculate under the hood.

pART 2012 on display at ArtSpring

An extraordinary display of creativity is on now at ArtSpring. pART Project 2012 is designed to help support cycling in Africa.

Velo Village celebrates rural cycling: here, there, everywhere. When SRAM Marketing wizard, David Zimberoff, reached out with an opportunity for us to contribute to cycling in rural Africa the answer was yes. The question was how?
“Start,” he said, “with a 100 bike parts. Make art. Auction the art. Give the proceeds to World Bicycle Relief.”

One piece caught my eye. It’s a hands-on kaleidoscope created by local woodworker Illtyd Perkins. The wooden knobs turn various sprockets to create the kaleidoscope effect. Multiple copies of every detail appear in the kaleidoscope.

The front (note the tiny bike):

Grad 2012 Lawn Art

Grounds Keeper Lawn Art for Grad 2012

In what has become a tradition in the Gulf Islands School District, a grounds keeper gives the hill between the upper and lower playing fields a timely and artistic haircut.

Salt Spring has a reputation as a haven for artistic folk so it seems only natural that the SD64 maintenance staff would come up with another clever sculpture!
