Tumbo Island

May 18, 2016

Tumbo Island
8:30 p.m. Looking at the southeast shore of Tumbo Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve

That’s a deer silhouette just beyond the last tree on the point.

Then behind, on the mainland, there’s a jet (which I’m pretty sure you won’t see at web size) above the clouds over the pointed peaks of the ‘Lions’.

Shoreline

May 13, 2016

Shoreline
One more from the Botanical Beach/Botany Bay series. This continues the walk around the headland and towards Botany Bay. Much of the beach here is flat, rocky and littered with tide pools and hundreds of species of plants and animals. But I find the shoreline with its raw, rough texture and limited colour palette captivating.

I’m thinking that the black and white conversion below might not translate well on some screens, but at full size, the texture and detail come alive here on a 5K screen:

Around the Corner

May 12, 2016

Around the Corner from Botanical Beach
Just around the corner from yesterday’s post.
Lots of action, intertidal creatures and countless tide pools.
…see also:
cool ocean breeze, warm sunshine on your face, constant crashing surf sounds.

A Special West Coast Beach

May 11, 2016

A Special West Coast Beach
West Coast Art
8 a.m., low tide (0.7 feet)

Not everyone’s idea of a beach I guess, but I seem to gravitate to it. I tend to think of the area as two beaches, Botanical Beach and Botany Bay—they’re joined but there’s no sign saying where one ends and the other begins. Not that it matters of course, but it makes the hike doubly entertaining as each beach has it’s own distinctive character.

Just outside Port Renfrew, the beaches are at one end of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. From the parking lot there’s a loop trail so you can walk down to the ocean (you’ll want to be there at a one foot tide or lower) explore the tide pools on the long, wide, and flat Botanical Beach, then find your way around the headland above, explore the raw beauty of the Botany Bay area, then hike the rest of the loop trail back to the parking lot.

Hiking the Wild Pacific Trail

April 27, 2016

Hiking the Wild Pacific Trail
It was a rare t-shirt weather couple of April days on the west coast—enough to entice us to stay one more.
Here during a hike along the Wild Pacific Trail, I stopped to watch the swells play through the shoreline rocks. Once again, time well spent!
