View from Salt Spring Island

April 13, 2014

From Seymour Heights

This is a portion of the view from a Seymour Heights property. It’s a large parcel that also includes some views to the north, some valley views and a more southernly ocean view including Saturna and the San Juan Islands.

The panoramic view above includes Salt spring Island, the Sister Islands and Chocolate Beach (Ganges Harbour) in the foreground. Then, above that, Trincomali Channel, Parker Island, Active Pass, and Galiano, Prevost, Pender and Mayne Islands. Above that is Georgia Strait and the mainland.

Here’s a cropped portion which shows more detail of the Active Pass area:

Two spring Beetles get together at Centennial Park

No sooner had I grabbed this quick shot than the driver of the dirtier VW started up and pulled away. I didn’t notice a driver in the car because of the tinted windows. Looks like she has just finished one more gulp of coffee and is about to beetle off somewhere.

Salt Spring Renewable Energy Conference

April 6, 2014

Salt Spring Renewable Energy Conference

The Salt Spring and Gulf Islands Renewable Energy Conference Issues and Solutions yesterday at the Gulf Islands Secondary Multipurpose Room. That’s Rob Abbott delivering the keynote.

In related news…a community funded project will see the installation of a 20 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system on the roof of the high school gym. The power will be sold to BC Hydro and the money realized will go to a GISS Solar Scholarship (for GISS students who demonstrate achievement and interest in renewable energy and climate action).

And, the south facing campus also had, I believe, the first geothermal heating system on the Island. The system runs under the lower soccer field.
