Salt Spring Sea Capers Boat Race 2013

June 10, 2013

Sea Capers Build a Boat Winners

Illtyd Perkins, sporting a Sea Capers 98 cap, arrives at the finish line first, narrowly beating the boat carrying his son and friends.

Sea Capers is back in 2013. And so is the Build a Boat Race.

Below, the first photo shows the prettiest boat (that ventured only a few feet from shore), Captain Jack starting the foot race to the boats, and a few mishaps and some mayhem. And of course, a Salt Spring free spirit oblivious to it all and performing on her own little island.

Congratulations to the organizers and volunteers.

Soccer Dog

Soccer Dog

One of the big activities on Salt Spring on the May long weekend is always the Challenge Cup Soccer Tournament. This guy, apparently a rescue dog from New Delhi, India loves to be at the games and loves to try to chase motorcycles going by.

He seemed happy enough to have his portrait captured.

Round Salt Spring 2013

May 20, 2013

Second wave of spinnakers on Trincomali Channel

A most unusual sight. A very large fleet of spinnakers flying up Trincomali Channel. Since this year’s race took the course less travelled (Saltspring Island to PORT), and since the wind was decent and steady, the boats were within sight of one-another 45 minutes into the race. This photo was taken from Fernwood dock; the first boats, led by Mojo, were already between Fernwood and Southey Point.

Mojo at Nose Point during Round Saltspring 2013

This speedy J 109 seen doing a sail change above, was leading the fleet here at Nose Point and was still ahead as it turned the corner at Southey Point.

Dinghy Dock

Salt Spring Sailing Club Dock

Early morning view of the dinghy dock at the Saltspring Island Sailing Club—home of this weekend’s Round Saltspring 2013 sailing race. More than 100 sailboats, including some super fast racers, will try to be first around this year.

(first around will pretty much always go to an all-out race boat, but with the handicap system in place, in theory everyone has an equal chance at correcting out to first place)

I think I caught a glimpse of Batman in the photo!
