Autumn Sunrise

November 9, 2012

Autumn Sunrise on Salt Spring Island

We’re approaching the time of year when the very best sunrise vistas are seen out Ganges Harbour. Soon the sun will rise directly out the harbour, and this combined with a drop in temperatures creates some fabulous views.

Sometimes when the temperature drops an extra degree or two, just before sunrise, a shallow layer of mist develops at sea level. The early light turns both the sky and the mist a glorious gold.

But that’s not usually until mid to late December. For now we have to be satisfied with this.

Beach Blanket
During a bit of wind yesterday, many maples set their leaves free.
These leaves had artfully arranged themselves at Baker Beach.

In the Light

November 5, 2012

in the light, Ganges BC

A foggy morning in Ganges Harbour. I love changes in weather; it’s as though mother nature has given her etch-a-sketch a good shake so we can look at a familiar scene in a new light.

The light here of course is what caught my eye. I’m on the look-out these for views that have a variety of luminance values rather than a variety of colours. Normally, dense fog has a flat grey monochromatic look (which can be beautiful in its own right). The sodium vapour lamps on the dock gave a contrasty, but somewhat ugly yellow colour.

The high contract of the foreground with the low contrast background make for a lovely black and white image.
