Summer Sign

Schools Closed

Gulf Island Secondary School (GISS) on Salt Spring Island

‘CLOSED’ seems a bit harsh. Lots goes on behind the scenes in a school district during the summer. But I’ve not seen the playing fields so brown—ever. Perhaps it’s just the the fields that are closed.

Evening on Salt Spring Island

June 29, 2015

Fernwood Evening

A delightful Saturday sunset as seen from Fernwood Pier on the north end of Salt Spring Island

This is a great place to get a reprieve from the unusual late day heat, particularly with a north-west breeze.
Inland on the west-facing rock the thermometer read 31 degrees. But it was goose-bump/chicken-skin weather watching the sunset.

Hiking Old Baldy Mountain

Hiking Old Baldy Mountain

This view is from the back side of Old Baldy Mountain looking west over the southern half of Shawnigan lake. We’re not at the top yet and this flat spot is a great place to take a photo (aka stopping to catch your breath) as the hike is a steep one. The main vista, from the top is east over the Gulf Islands.

Michela Sorrentino at The Pod

Michela Sorrentino 2015

Michela Sorrentino opened a new show last night at the Pod Contemporary gallery in Ganges. Michela’s work is both fun and detailed. Below is a portion of this piece—a bit closer to what you would see if you were standing in front of the painting:

Cooling off by the River

June 26, 2015

Chemainus River

Even though there’s normally a lot more water in this river at this time of year, it’s still a great place to cool off on a hot day. There are interesting rocks to explore, some deep pools and some shady areas.
