A schooner flying four sails heads through Captain Passage between Salt Spring (Maracaibo/Nose Point) in the foreground, and Prevost Island above.

In the distance we’re seeing the entrance to Active pass between Galiano Island on the left, and Mayne Island on the right.

The Impossible Daytrip

July 10, 2014

Mission Hill Grounds

Well, almost impossible. You can take the Saturday early morning direct ferry to Tsawwassen. Drive the Coquihalla race track to West Kelowna and arrive by noon. Visit a few wineries and get back to Salt Spring via the evening direct ferry.

Our getaway included an overnight in West Kelowna. And we did visit Quail’s Gate (best modern architecture), Little Straw Vineyards (more our speed with great lunch and wines), and Mission Hill (best views, grounds and artwork).

Both photos are from Mission Hill.

Aboard the Bowen Queen

July 8, 2014

Georgia Strait from the Bowen Queen

A superb summer evening aboard the Bowen Queen, crossing Georgia Strait

What Islanders call the ‘direct’ run from Tsawwassen (near Vancouver) to Long Harbour on Salt Spring Island. This unusual BC Ferries run tends to both leave and arrive on time and cuts travel time to half or sometimes to much less than half of the more common, multiple island stop run.

The bonuses this warm summer evening were calm seas, gorgeous skies, three ferries in Active Pass (!) and waiting for a pod of Orcas to swim by. Did I mention that we left and arrived on time?

West Coast Shoreline

Port Renfrew Shoreline

West Coast Shoreline near Port Renfrew, BC

It’s possible to have a great day trip to the ‘real’ west coast by catching an early morning ferry from Vesuvius and returning to Salt Spring Island in time for dinner. It’s an interesting drive (paved all the way) and there are some great beaches to explore (at low tide).
