New Salt Spring Island View

July 24, 2013

Salt Spring Island View

Here’s a new view of Salt Spring Island. OK, perhaps not a new view. But a photo of a view that was new to me, and hopefully, to you.

We’re looking north west over Gary Oaks Winery and Vineyard. Their website says their location has great Fung Shui. Not sure about that, but it’s a peaceful view over the farms, Burgoyne Bay, the mouth of Sansum Narrows (on the upper left) and Vancouver Island beyond.

This area is sometimes referred to as Lee’s Hill. In the foreground, across the first field you can see power lines running left to right. These are along the main road from Fulford to Ganges.

Arbutus Bark Peeling

July 17, 2013

Bark peeling on an arbutus tree
From our deck and from the office*, we love to watch the sculptures change daily on this Arbutus tree.

The photos below show the tree the first day of peeling, and three days after the peeling began.
It takes about one week for the south side to completely peel.

The Arbutus is an evergreen tree which grows close to the ocean. As the weather becomes warm and dry, many of the leaves fall and the bark begins to peel to reveal a new skin.

*This Arbutus is beside a small Maple where we sometimes see an owl.
