Fernwood Dock on Salt Spring Island

January 30, 2012

Fernwood Dock, Salt Spring Island by John Cameron

No sunrise on Salt Spring this morning. But it seems the Fernwood Dock area always provides a photo opportunity. Especially if you’re willing to get your feet wet.

I liked the look of these crusty rocks, but it meant wading into the chuck to get the shot. A very low ISO and very small aperture allowed for a long shutter speed. Which in turn gave the water a creamy look. And of course winter clouds are often magnificent.

Majestic Mount Maxwell

Majestic Mount Maxwell

Iconic Mount Maxwell in recent snowy splendour. Visitors have a great view of the mountain as they arrive in Fulford Harbour (from Swartz Bay). They see the mountain several times as they travel along Fulford-Ganges Road. Maxwell is also visible from the Maple Bay area.

Power Performance with GISPA

High School Music on Saltspring Island

It’s end of semester time at Gulf Islands Secondary. The music department always surprises with an astonishing depth of talent. If only you could hear this photo! This is one of the GISPA students (Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts) who go far beyond what you’d expect from high school—even in an arts community like Salt Spring Island.

photographer’s note:
You might have noticed this photo has been tagged as a favourite. This one’s a bit of a personal thing; you kind of had to be there. There’s no tech/dress rehearsal for this show so I had to shoot during the performance. I arranged for the best seat a month ago. But one minute before the sold-out show was to start, a couple of tallish chairs were brought into the theatre and placed directly in front of me. Then two tallish teenagers parked themselves on the chairs.

I scrambled to the sound/light booth at the far back of the theatre and managed to get some shots from there. The photo info below will show that the limits were pushed.

Canon 1D MKIV ISO 6400 300mm f/2.8 1/160sec 0 ev
(handheld, no room for tripod in the booth)

So that’s why it’s a favourite.

Brandon Shaw with Gordon Head Div s Soccer

Recent Division 2 soccer action with a visit by Gordon Head from Victoria. The Gordon Head goalie was fantastic in the first half; the local team better in the second.

Ominous Salt Spring Sky

January 23, 2012

Fernwood Sky, Salt Spring Island

The dawn sky started off clear with some dark clouds to the East and North. Within an hour, the view from the Fernwood area towards Archive Pass changed dramatically. Another hour would bring snow.

The Tree

January 22, 2012

Snow Covered Tree

A single tree, naked or not has a certain graphic quality. This one, dressed in recent snow, is splendid.
