A Different Ferry

A Different Ferry
After more than 30 years of travelling on the three Salt Spring Island ferry routes, I have to say this ferry takes the cake. It loads in two minutes, scoots quietly across on a cable system in 5 minutes, and unloads in a minute. It runs from 5 am until 10 pm.

And it’s free.

This is the Needles Ferry (Needles to Fauquier across Lower Arrow Lake). It’s been operating since 1913.

Ferry Time

Queen of Nanaimo
Onboard the Queen of Nanaimo

These folks have lots of time as they watch Prevost and Salt Spring islands go by. They started in Tsawwassen, stopped at Galiano, stopped at Mayne, and will soon be stopping at Pender Island. And then they get to turn around and sail to Long Harbour on Salt Spring Island.

Industrial Art by the Ferry Terminal

Art by the Ferry Terminal

If you’ve spent time waiting at the Vesuvius Terminal—and who hasn’t—you’ve probably watched the light play on this artwork. If not, be sure to check it out. In this photo though we’re looking through the cutouts in one of the metal fence panels and seeing bits of a building behind.

We often credit architects for ‘seeing’ the sightlines inside a building before the building has, well, been built. I wonder if the same is true in this case? Did the metal fabricator plan this see-through effect?
