Gulf Islands Secondary School

Gulf Islands Secondary School Construction

Construction of the 89 000 square foot (8279 square-metre) Gulf Islands Secondary School began in May, 1992 with a project cost of just over 13 million dollars. The school opened in September 1994 with 678 students in grades 8 through 12. Salt Spring Middle School opened the following year in the old high school with students from grades 6 through 8, leaving GISS with grades 9 through 12.

At the time of opening, GISS was one of only a handful of buildings in British Columbia with ‘ground source’ heat; 20 kilometres of pipe collected heat five feet under the playing fields. And another 40 kilometres of pipe in the school’s floors provided radiant heat. The trend continues as the school now sports a huge solar array on the gym roof.

S.W.A.T.

Teachers at GISS lunchtime Costume Contest

When Thursday is the last school day of the week and when Hallowe’en is on Saturday and when you are at Gulf Islands Secondary…there’s a lunchtime costume contest. And when you are a teacher, you get to play along.

I grabbed a quick photo of these two teachers who, despite trying to look like the local S.W.A.T. team (we don’t have a S.W.A.T. team on Salt Spring Island), were helping the students set up for the contest. Lovely lighting for this photo was provided by the sun flooding through the large multi-purpose room windows.

GISS Senior Soccer

The Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) senior boy’s soccer team goes through and around the Shawinigan Lake School defence. The GISS team took this first home game 5-1.
They are playing at Portlock Park while they wait for the new grass (recently pictured) at the GISS fields.

Soccer Pitch Rebirth

Baby Soccer Pitch

Not many weeks ago the playing fields at Gulf Islands Secondary were parched, devoid of grass and prepared for a rebirth. The SD64 grounds crew will continue to baby the fields for a few more months and then set the fields free to the not-so-patiently waiting hoards. It looks like it will be worth the wait.
