Spring Water

Little Qualicum Falls

A quick day trip to Vancouver Island. Little Qualicum river flows out of Cameron Lake*. There are a series of falls in Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park–easily accessible with views like this–all behind the safety of a fence.

*not believed to be named after the small white dog sometimes pictured on this blog

Chemainus River

Chemainus River
12:45 p.m. looking across the Chemainus River
Day trips seem to be (happily) creeping into my life once again. I knew they were there, just lurking under the surface.
Part business, part household errands—the day’s list was checked off early. So there was a slight detour on the way home from Duncan on Vancouver Island. This, and other photos are the result. This particular image can be printed very large with more detail than can been seen on the best of screens.

Leap Day

February 29, 2016

Leap Year Day

Every four years our calendar has a leap year because the Earth orbits the Sun in 365.242 days. 2016 is a leap year with 366 days so today—February 29th—is a leap day. But wait there’s more as that doesn’t add up:

Just adding a day doesn’t quite tweak the calendar; it’s still off by a few minutes. So, “leap years occur in years divisible by four, except for those divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400. Confusing enough for you? In effect, that means that 97 out of every 400 years are leap years, including the century years 1600 and 2000 but NOT 1700, 1800 and 1900.”*

The image above is from a grade twelve student portrait set I did with Aina.**

You can see selected images from the shoot at johncameron.ca here.
