A Midsummer Night’s Dream

May 26, 2016

A Midsummer Night's Dream at GISS
The Acting 11/12 class performs their end-of-semester show: A Midsummer Night’s Dream this evening and tomorrow evening outside in the high school courtyard (May 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at the door).

This photo was taken as part of my business cause: performing arts at Gulf Islands Secondary school. It was made during yesterday’s dress rehearsal.

The photographic challenges were many. The rehearsal runs continuously, and while I was free to move, the actors were almost constantly moving so I was continuously unsure what would happen next. And there are no ‘do-overs.

Further, the lighting was a combination of harsh directional sunlight mixed with solid black shadows.

This makes getting a decisive moment—both realistically and technically—hugely difficult. So when the occasional image, like the one above successfully captures a moment, I count it a challenge met.

Countdown to Pinocchio

April 17, 2016

nm

This and twenty-one other beautiful faces can be seen in print form in the ArtSpring lobby during this week’s original GISPA* production. Be sure to have a look at this page, and in person at ArtSpring.

By the time you read this, the students will have put in a full day moving all the pieces to ArtSpring Theatre and creating the set. And some will still be painting the floor. Monday is for tech and dress rehearsals. And there may be a few tickets left for the show (Tuesday to Thursday, 7:30 p.m.)

(Don’t forget to have a look at the GISPA performer faces)

* The Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts, housed at Gulf Islands Secondary School on Salt Spring Island presents it’s twelfth annual year-end performance. Pinocchio—like the shows before it— is a “fusion of music, dance and theatre, collectively created, composed, and choreographed by the students and under the direction of Bruce Smith (music), Sonia Langer (dance) and Jason Donaldson (theatre)”.

First Performer Portrait

It’s been a great two days of portrait shooting. Here’s the first finished GISPA performer image. The portraits will be printed and on display in the ArtSpring Theatre lobby at this year’s show. (April 19, 20, 21)

Performing Arts, including GISPA (the Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts) at Gulf Islands Secondary School is my business cause.

Missed One

February 5, 2016

GISS Music student at ArtSpring

Someone at the local high school (Gulf Islands Secondary) asked to use this image in am upcoming course selection presentation. This was one of the hundreds of images I did for Bruce Smith (instructor) and his band of awe-inspriing performers, and one I’d overlooked as a possible for this website. So here it is. I’ve sent a message to Bruce asking in what grade the performer is. What’s your guess?

The Phantom Tollbooth

The Phantom Tollbooth

4:10 p.m Tech and Dress Rehearsal for The Phantom Tollbooth
During one scene in the show several performers used a phone to provide individual light. Clever, effective and captivating.

The Acting 11/12 class at Gulf Islands Secondary presents its sharp-witted-end-of-semester show tonight (Wednesday) through Friday at ArtSpring Theatre, 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10.

Here’s the press release:

GISS DRAMA PRESENTS THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH

Embark on a magical adventure with The Phantom Tollbooth, adapted for the stage by Gulf Islands Secondary School grades 11/12 acting students.

The Phantom Tollbooth is a story about a boy named Milo, who can never work out what to do with himself. One day, a magical tollbooth suddenly appears in his bedroom and transports him into a land much different from his own. There he meets a cast of quirky characters such as the Whether Man, the Humbug, the Dodecahedron, King Azaz, and the Mathemagician. Milo is accompanied by his trusty automobile and dog named Tock as he goes on a journey to rescue two Princesses and return peace to the Kingdom of Knowledge.
