Forest Floor

A delicate and dreamy (and normally) April forest floor scene.
Everything’s early this year.
The West Coast

Near Botany Bay
Two and one half hours from Vesuvius.
A place I just need to visit at least once per year.

The Old-Growth Forest

Looking up in an old-growth forest
This week I had the good fortune to wander, alone, for two hours in a grove of ancient trees. I did not see or hear any people, cars or other activity. The look, the smell, but mostly the feel of a true old-growth forest is something we should all get a chance to do. Once you do you’ll not mistake it for a bunch of big trees in a forested area. It’s different and it’s precious. And it’s not just a bunch of clear lumber.
Of course I did take a number of photographs. Couldn’t not. But without a reference, many lack scale. They aren’t just big, their huge. Just look at the pair of Douglas Firs in the photo above. But how big are they really?
So I included the only ‘reference model’ around. Kind of like a Sasquatch sighting.

On Watch

A ferry passenger seems to be standing watch on the Howe Sound Queen.
It’s an early morning sailing so the sun isn’t quite up and the lights of the mill at Crofton are reflecting across the ocean.
