First to Finish Doesn’t Always Win

May 18, 2015

Ogopogo and Marda Gras at RSI 2015

So here’s the thing. The first boat to cross the finish line doesn’t necessarily win a sailing race. Round Saltspring 2015 was scored using the Time on Distance formula and the distance used was 42.0 nautical miles.

Each boat has an assigned handicap. In the photo above the little boat, a ‘Left Coast Dart’ with 5 sailors on deck (Ogopogo) has a handicap of 114 seconds per mile. The big boat, a ‘Santa Cruz 52’ with a million sailors on deck (Marda Gras) has a handicap of -9 sec per mile.

What this means is that for every mile of the race, Marda Gras needs to be about 2 minutes ahead of Ogopogo. Marda Gras needs to finish about 84 minutes ahead of  Ogopogo.

In the photo above, about a third of the way into the race, Marda Gras needs to be far ahead of Ogopogo.

Marda‘s elapsed time on the Round Saltspring course was 8:28:18. Ogopogo‘s elapsed time was 9:16:02.
Which boat finished ahead on corrected time?

By the way baaad kitty!’s elapsed time was 08:28:43, her corrected time (based on her handicap over 42 miles) was 07:48:09. And that was the fastest time overall.

Salt Spring Salads Opens

April 18, 2015

Near Mahon Hall: high school students survive local paparazzi on opening day.

The GISS Culinary Program have been impressive the last few years. Now they’ve opened the Salt Spring Salads food cart. And they have the fresh goods to back it up. The school garden, the hydroponic greenhouse, and the living lettuce wall (and I’m sure some things I don’t know about) are coming together to provide employment for students through the summer with proceeds funding culinary program projects back at the school. Check them out today (Saturday) at Mahon Hall.

Custom

Hand Made Door Handle

In my travels through some of the finest homes on Salt Spring Island, I’ve seen some interesting things. This is one of many entrance features that have caught my eye. (the vertical laminated piece is under pressure due to the bend and works perfectly)

More photographs have been added to PRINTS page. Why not stop by for a look.

Aerator

March 2, 2015

St. Mary Lake Aerator in Fog

That’s one of the dormant aerators on St. Mary Lake. Meanwhile some mixing of air and water was going on above the surface.

How big are the aerators? This big:

St. Mary Lake aerator

(they were assembled in May 2011, in the parking lot of Community Gospel Chapel, and hoisted over to the lake by a massive helicopter)
