There’s a Theme

Ferry Traffic from Long Harbour going downtown

Car traffic attempts to get to Ganges from the north while two optimistic travellers await the bus. Meanwhile bikers prepare for a Salt Spring ascent.

Parking in Ganges

The famously clogged parking lot that has a road through its middle.

Working on the sink hole

There’s the bus that the folks in the top photo were waiting for. And more traffic—this time trying to get into Ganges from the south. Meanwhile workers prod the village sink hole for the lost contractor who paints the faded lines on Salt Spring’s roads.

Wall to Wall at the Saturday Market

Salt Spring Saturday Market, 2015

11:30 a.m. Salt Spring Saturday Market
Getting a Ganges parking spot was like winning a lottery at this week’s market. The farm/food section was doing a roaring business. So good to see. That reminds me, time to get a garlic braid.

Creek Bed

Creek Bed Shadows

During a recent long solo hike, I heard odd splashing sounds on the trail ahead. I surprised two large black ravens (all three of us startled…).
The ravens had somehow found water in this dry ravine.

Yesterday on the Pacific Circle Highway

Smoke from the Lizard Lake Fire along the Pacific Marine Route.

1:00 pm on the Pacific Circle Highway just before it was closed to traffic. And just before I turned tail for Salt Spring Island…

A 135 hectare fire 1 kilometre from Lizard Lake (27 kilometres SW of Cowichan Lake) was discovered Wednesday and the highway was closed to traffic. Here’s the BC Wildfire Service link for updated info. This is a suspected human-caused fire. Argh.

Now that’s a Hiking Trail!

August 11, 2015

Trail near Moose Falls

Really, really big trees. You have to walk among them to understand why so many people are fans of preserving the remaining first growth forests. These Douglas Fir giants, some over 400 years old survived one of BC’s largest ever forest fires, way back in 1938. It’s astonishing to see a massive Cedar beside one of the old Douglas firs and realize the Cedar has grown since the big fire.

By the way this is one of the trails in the day use area of Elk Falls Provincial Park, just outside Campbell River on Vancouver Island. There’s a view of Moose Falls from this point. There are three falls in the series, Moose, Deer and Elk. (vaguely similar to BC Ferries’ new ferry naming system…)

Stay tuned, more on Elk Falls coming tomorrow.
