There’s a Theme

Ferry Traffic from Long Harbour going downtown

Car traffic attempts to get to Ganges from the north while two optimistic travellers await the bus. Meanwhile bikers prepare for a Salt Spring ascent.

Parking in Ganges

The famously clogged parking lot that has a road through its middle.

Working on the sink hole

There’s the bus that the folks in the top photo were waiting for. And more traffic—this time trying to get into Ganges from the south. Meanwhile workers prod the village sink hole for the lost contractor who paints the faded lines on Salt Spring’s roads.

Now that’s a Hiking Trail!

August 11, 2015

Trail near Moose Falls

Really, really big trees. You have to walk among them to understand why so many people are fans of preserving the remaining first growth forests. These Douglas Fir giants, some over 400 years old survived one of BC’s largest ever forest fires, way back in 1938. It’s astonishing to see a massive Cedar beside one of the old Douglas firs and realize the Cedar has grown since the big fire.

By the way this is one of the trails in the day use area of Elk Falls Provincial Park, just outside Campbell River on Vancouver Island. There’s a view of Moose Falls from this point. There are three falls in the series, Moose, Deer and Elk. (vaguely similar to BC Ferries’ new ferry naming system…)

Stay tuned, more on Elk Falls coming tomorrow.

Elizabeth May and the Debate

August 8, 2015

Elizabeth May, Sannich-Gulf Islands

Elizabeth May signs appeared on Salt Spring Island the day the 2015 federal election was announced. She and her merry band of volunteers were first to the sign posts. And I noticed the campaign office is already open on Salt Spring.

And was it just me or did she not—once again—seem to be the voice of knowledge, experience and reason during the (August 6th MacLean’s) debate?
Unlike the others, it seemed she wasn’t reading from a prepared script but actually knew about everything she and the others were discussing.
Perhaps she should be involved in more than just this one debate?
Lucky to have her representing the Gulf Islands.

Man and Nature

Man and Nature

A large ferry is dwarfed by British Columbia’s coastal mountains.

This is the Queen of Burnaby during a recent evening sailing from Comox to Powell River.

As mentioned earlier, Salt Spring Photos is branching out this summer with short trips to beautiful Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and area. Enjoy the ride!

Two Sided View

Two Sides of Fernwood Pier 2

One of Salt Spring Island’s Two-Sided Views

Lots of places have a two-sided view; we’ve seen them before in the last six years of Salt Spring Photos.

It’s easy to get ‘focused’ on what is directly in front of you. But it’s always important to take a look behind as well; in this case a couple fishing on the dock, away from the sunset, and with a fabulous pastel sky to the east.

Two Sides of Fernwood Pier 1

And, while musing, I might as well add the following:

Sunrise views are often better before the sun actually rises. And sunsets are often better after the sun sets. Yet most people, arrive for the actual sunrise and most people tend to  leave immediately after the sun sets.

The sky at sunset this day was mostly grey. A few people who came to the pier to view the sunset and take a few photos left disappointed the minute the sun set. They saw neither the beautiful west sky nor the beautiful east sky.
