Salt Spring Salads Opens

Near Mahon Hall: high school students survive local paparazzi on opening day.

The GISS Culinary Program have been impressive the last few years. Now they’ve opened the Salt Spring Salads food cart. And they have the fresh goods to back it up. The school garden, the hydroponic greenhouse, and the living lettuce wall (and I’m sure some things I don’t know about) are coming together to provide employment for students through the summer with proceeds funding culinary program projects back at the school. Check them out today (Saturday) at Mahon Hall.

The 600+ students at Gulf Islands Secondary had a chance to experience wheelchair basketball. There were enough chairs for four teams at a time (2 games, cross-court). From what I saw, it was a very big hit!

In the photo above, the green team had three participants from a boys’ school team. They figured out how to squash their opponents with a fast-break strategy…and seemed somehow comfortable shooting quickly from a sitting position.

The Salt Spring Market is underway.
And it looks like Molly’s got her hands full this year at the Bullock Lake Farm Stand.
It’s great to see young people enthusiastically taking on the farming business.
