Salt Spring Springboard Stump

March 12, 2016

Springboard Stump

This massive Cedar stump (about 10 feet high) is evidence of the early days of logging on Salt Spring Island. In order to reduce the amount of cutting (by hand) and make possible the cutting of a tree on a steep slope, the loggers cut notches to accommodate ‘springboards’. They would then stand on the springboards and cut the tree above the much wider butt. This would not only reduce the amount of work but would make transporting the log possible. Or so I’ve read…

For me it was a beautiful moment with exquisite light and colours—and a glimpse into the past.

What a Difference a Rain Makes

March 11, 2016

Raging Stream on Salt Spring Island

Believe it or not, this is the same stream featured previously, but after yesterday’s downpour. It’s taken from the same spot, but is a horizontal photo. And that’s because there was nothing to see but water below in the foreground. None of the mid stream or right shore boulders could be seen.

What made it even more interesting—and a bit scary—was the muted sound of a rock tumbling down the mountain. Eventually I realized the occasional boulder was hurtling underwater, and thus unseen, down the stream.

Here’s the original photo again for comparison:

Whistler Air C-FJBP and The Scholarship

Whistler Air and The Scholarship

6:45 a.m.
A Whistler Air Beaver seaplane; (part of, and sporting Harbour Air colours and operating a Salt Spring Air route…I think I’ve got that right) has been prepped by the dockhands and is ready for the first passengers of the day. In the background, the School District 64 (Gulf Islands) water taxi Scholarship is heading for Sturdies Bay on Galiano and Miners Bay on Mayne Island to pick up students and bring them back to Salt Spring Island for the day.

Trincomali Channel

Trincomali Channel, February Morning

One Log in the Current

During the last couple of weeks on Salt Spring, most early mornings have seen only brief breaks in the cloud. This particular morning was quite dull at dawn. So I had lots of time to watch the log in the photo above pass by under Fernwood pier. The tide and currents were surprisingly strong and the path the log took was also unusual. This would have been great intel in my sailboat racing days!

Heading home along Walker Hook Road (photo free), I noticed the sky opening up a bit so I stopped the truck and scurried down to the shoreline. This was taken from the Maliview area towards Active Pass.
