Day in the Life of Salt Spring

While looking through my archives for a particular image, I stumbled across this one. I thought it might give you a giggle, and in a way it’s timely…

I realized I completely forgot about the Driftwood’s annual A Day in the Life of Salt Spring which was (I think) shot one week ago today. How things change; there was a time I’d spend the equivalent of three working days on the Day in the Life project.

Does anyone know anything about this year’s project? See anyone out for the Driftwood?

Oh, by the way, this photo was taken at 7:15 am on June 20, 2008. I thought it was perfect for the Day in the Life project because after a couple of years of working on this project, we we’re struggling to provide an insight to the sometimes unusual or unexpected daily life on Salt Spring Island. So even in 2013, I think this qualifies. And Tim’s not a little guy, but his truck’s a monster. Here’s the caption I provided at the time:

Tim Duke’s 2004 F-350 was hand built for the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. Street legal with economical 6 litre diesel, the truck has only driven 8000 KM. Tim was heading off island that morning where the truck would receive a custom interior.

The End of Two-foot-itus

June 26, 2013

Athena in Ganges Harbour

Ganges Harbour

Thinking of picking up a sailboat? This one should keep you away from the dreaded ‘two-foot-itus‘ for a fair while. It’s 295 feet long; squeeze it on to your soccer field in the off season.

It’s probably for sale, most sailboats are. But remember, if you have to ask the price… In the meantime there’s a wealth of info about the yacht and its owner on the internet.

* thanks Tom for the insider info on Athena’s pending arrival in Ganges.

Three Tough Welders

Three Tough Welders at GISS

BC Business Magazine is doing an article on ‘girls in trades’. The GISS girls are seen here trying out their best ‘tough look’ during yesterday afternoon’s photoshoot. Actually the shoot was about ten percent ‘tough’ and ninety percent giggles and laughter.

A Boy and his Dog

A boy plays with his dog on Chesterman Beach

A boy revs up his dog for a rambunctious romp on Chesterman Beach.

It’s the far limits of a day trip from Salt Spring Island, but if you leave on the first Vesuvius ferry you can be there around 10:30. Stay until late afternoon and make it back, happily exhausted, via a late ferry. Sometimes you just have to heed the call of the West Coast…

Gallery 8 with Florence Roberge

June 19, 2013

Florence Roberge at Gallery 8

Florence has a stunning display at Gallery 8 right now. And I have documented her work which is hanging upstairs in the main gallery. But I also liked the way the light was playing in the gallery itself…
