A Special West Coast Beach

May 11, 2016

A Special West Coast Beach
West Coast Art
8 a.m., low tide (0.7 feet)

Not everyone’s idea of a beach I guess, but I seem to gravitate to it. I tend to think of the area as two beaches, Botanical Beach and Botany Bay—they’re joined but there’s no sign saying where one ends and the other begins. Not that it matters of course, but it makes the hike doubly entertaining as each beach has it’s own distinctive character.

Just outside Port Renfrew, the beaches are at one end of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. From the parking lot there’s a loop trail so you can walk down to the ocean (you’ll want to be there at a one foot tide or lower) explore the tide pools on the long, wide, and flat Botanical Beach, then find your way around the headland above, explore the raw beauty of the Botany Bay area, then hike the rest of the loop trail back to the parking lot.

Low Tide Gathering

Low Tide Gathering at Fernwood on Salt Spring Island
Everyone seemed happy this Sunday afternoon, and these folks were no exception. Cameron particularly enjoyed the extra attention, especially from the pretty young woman who said, “A Westie, that’s the kind of dog I want!” I could tell Cameron was ready to abandon me on the spot, and probably would have if I hadn’t produced the bag of treats… Males—dogs especially—are so transparent.

Morning Civil Twilight Colours

May 1, 2016

Twilight Colours

The sky colours are more intense during civil twilight*  than they are after sunrise, as shown in the above photo taken from Fernwood Pier.

There’s a beam of light in the sky and reflected in the water; apparently this is called a sun pillar. And to the right, an aging condensation trail from a high flying jet.

Gulf Islands Morning

March 27, 2016

Gulf Islands Morning

This photograph could be titled ‘Waiting for the sunrise which didn’t happen’. Well, it did slowly get brighter, but there was no blast of colour in the clouds. It was however, an unusually tranquil morning; virtually silent with no road, water or air traffic. Lovely.

Spring Sky Too

Spring Sky Too

This photo was taken only a few minutes after yesterday’s sky image. Spring’s changeable weather.
