Groundwork

August 18, 2016

Groundwork
I spotted this art piece while waiting for my Salt Spring Salads*.

We’re looking down at Diana Lynn Thompson’s Groundwork, part of her LANDART collection on display outside Mahon Hall.

If your computing device allows you to zoom in a bit you’ll find lots of man-made items ‘hidden’ in the various areas of the piece.

*Operated by the GISS culinary/cafeteria program, this food truck (between Mahon Hall and the School Board Office) is home to the best super fresh, meal size ($9) salads on Salt Spring! Open from 11:30 to 3:45. The proceeds provide jobs for cafeteria students working at the food truck during the summer—and anything left over goes back into the program to help make it even better!

Changes

August 16, 2016

Changes
A little time changes everything. One day riding on top of someone’s shoulders in the Saturday Market. Then what seems a short time later, performing solo on stage at ArtSpring Theatre.

Gypsy Mermaid Van

Van on Salt Spring Island
This image goes back some years. We’re revisiting it on Salt Spring Photos because the photo graces the cover of John Grain’s new book Mod’n Lavender: Salt Spring Island in the ’60s. John hopes to do a Salt Spring Island launch of the book some time in September. Look for a Gulf Islands Driftwood article and possibly a session at the Salt Spring Library.

August 16th Update from Salt Spring Library:
Saturday, September 24, 2PM
Book Launch: Mod ‘n Lavender: Salt Spring Island in the ’60s.
Author John Grain revisits teenage life on SS in the 1960s at the Salt Spring Library.

Can’t wait? I found a link to electronic and print copies here.

Author John Grain revisits teenage life on Salt Spring Island during the 1960s. “Salt Spring Island was the hub, the focal point of the counterculture in Canada and I had missed it,” says Grain.
