Fishing a Reflection

March 31, 2016

Fishing on a Reflected St. Mary Lake

Fishing St. Mary Lake (electric motors only).
Which more than makes sense, especially when your drinking water comes from this lake. Water on this island is a huge concern, one that was highlighted in last year’s drought.

*note: for those of you who visit the site each day, there will likely be a few days without new posts. I’ll be taking the time to transition between computer systems.

Salt Spring Library at Moonset

Salt Spring Library at Moonset

Looks like the local library has gone another step in an effort to protect the public and discourage skateboarders from riding the concrete retaining walls and metal handrails. That’s a new custom fence (on the left above the steps) which curves around the concrete planters. Before the fence was there, it was possible to walk or skate along the planter walls. And it was easy to topple ten feet or more to the bottom of a flight of concrete steps against the building.

Last Light at Fernwood

March 28, 2016

Last Light at Fernwood

The last bits of light last night. The colour was strong but only for about a minute (and was missed by the folks who left 10 minutes early :-) then became quite dark with dull greys a couple of minutes later. So the first three and the last two (30 second) exposures were recycled.

In case you are wondering:
Was it really this colour? Yes. (depending on what your monitor is showing you)
Was it really this dark? Yes. (we used a flashlight getting off the beach)
Why do the water and sky look ‘dreamy’? It’s a 30 sec. exposure; the clouds and water are moving so those areas look (intentionally) soft.

Easter Weekend Afternoon

March 26, 2016

Beach Walk

Sometimes we forget how good we have it here on the Island.

Cameron, who is on the injured list, has been moping around and was due for an interesting walk. But because of his ‘sports injury’, the usual mountain hikes were out. He’s a big fan of the intertidal zone though, so we headed out for a short beach walk. But I had forgotten it was the busiest weekend of the year. Fernwood Café was packed inside and out. There were cars on the side of the road, people walking on the road and people out on the Pier.

Five minutes down the beach, we met one person (knitting). Cameron reported there most excellent smells everywhere. And the photo above was our view. One person walking on the pier.

So, in the middle of a sunny afternoon on the busiest weekend of the year—not that crowded after all. Pretty good, even by Island standards.
