Day’s End

End of Day
South Chesterman Beach
Clouds roll in; one surfer calls it a day.
Another day of incredible skies and reflections.

Solstice Moon over Chesterman Beach

Solstice Moon over Chesterman Beach
The Solstice Moon is about to set over Frank Island on Chesterman Beach. Strangely, the beach is deserted at this time of day.

Summer Solstice, Coastal Sunset

June 21, 2016

Summer Solstice Sunset 2016
Intense coastal colour at Chesterman Beach during the Summer Solstice.

Sunsets require you to take many digital images in your quest of getting the best image possible. And that’s what happened here. In hopes of getting the scene at it’s very best, it’s common to start when the scene is lovely and keep shooting as it gets better and better (in this case intense colour and reflection) and not stopping until the scene is visibly past its prime.

This image was taken about 30 minutes after sunset, and before the sky became too dark and dull. It’s presented as seen, and as shot—without gobs of filters or over-editing. (only a bit of contrast and a tiny bit of sharpening). At this point in the sunset, it was getting dark. Attempting to show exactly what was shot, I did not adjust the brightness.

What an amazing start to summer.

Canto Crash near Radar Hill
This is the February 8, 1945 crash site of a RCAF Canso/Catalina. It’s near Radar Hill in the Pacific Rim National Park between Ucluelet and Tofino. There’s a detailed story by Dirk Septer of the crash (at this link).

Bonus:
The trail* to the crash site winds through this abandoned building:

Abandoned Building Near Radar Hill Crash Site
* as of June 2016, the ‘trail’ from the abandoned building to the crash site was extremely muddy; it’s possible to sink your foot 6 to 12 inches into the mud—I’d wear tall rubber boots with good tread if I were going today…

No Wonder

June 15, 2016

It’s no wonder visitors like to stop by in the sunny season. We used to sail in the Gulf Islands and parts beyond and always liked coming into this harbour.

We’re taking off (see what we did there?) for a few days and will likely be back posting photos by Tuesday afternoon.
