The Wet Season

January 26, 2016

Water Season

1:55 p.m. near Southey Point

It’s sometimes hard to tell when the wet season begins and ends on Salt Spring Island. However the recent couple of deluge days left no doubt that we’re in it. There was water where I’d not seen it (going back 30 yrs or so), and more water than usual in places where you expect to see water after a couple of big rains.

Another View of Crofton Mill

5:50 p.m. A different angle.

Looking back from the north-western shores of Salt Spring Island toward Crofton and the mill on Vancouver Island.

(of course, that’s only true when I remember to the link the image to the day’s post)

Abandoned, I think

January 22, 2016

Abandoned, I think

Sometimes there are signs of life around this place as it seems there’s still a bit of farming going on. But the now-drooping Christmas lights didn’t come on this year and the plastic covering the door the openings has give up the ghost. The two duck sculptures however are still on display on the lower left window ledge.

From the Office Window

January 18, 2016

pileated woodpecker from office window

Through the office window on a dark rainy day, a Pileated Woodpecker and I keep an eye on each other.

bonus: the bird was frozen on this Douglas Fir for more than six hours. Only its head was moving. I’ve read this can have something to do with that pesky hawk again. (after an altercation with a predator, the woodpecker may not return to its nest until the hawk has left the area)

Winter Morning in Ganges Harbour

January 16, 2016

Winter Morning in Ganges Harbour

Right on schedule, in early January the sun rises straight out Ganges Harbour—about 122 degrees Southeast. And does so at a very civilized time around 8 a.m. This makes for lots of gawking and traffic congestion (30 cars/hr  instead of 10) on Upper Ganges Road.
