Last Light

One last evening at Long Beach, Vancouver Island.
Two dogs and their people, were the second last off the beach that night.

The last rays of light illuminate the thundering surf as seen from the Green Point area. Seems like few people experience this scene, after sunset, in November. (This photo was taken by the last person on the beach; it was completely dark by the time I got onto the forest trail leading back to the campsite.)
It’s hard to say how long this trip will satisfy the need to visit the west coast—but we’ll be back in the spring for sure!
Last Daytrip: Salt Spring Island to Ucluelet

With a sudden forecast of one wonderful weather day at the coast, a final trip in the Four Wheel Camper became the agenda. I left Salt Spring Island in the morning rain. The rain was heavy with significant fog heading north to Nanaimo but began to clear as I headed west. Instead of a non-stop race to the coast, I made photo stops in the sunshine at Larry Lake (above) and at Kennedy River (below).

So, the 7am ferry from Salt Spring, two comfortable photo stops, and lunch in Ucluelet at noon. Then an afternoon hike on the Wild Pacific Trail. And a late afternoon check-in at a Green Point campsite (in Pacific Rim National Park)—with an ocean view.
Many ‘Salt Springers’ admit to having an obsession—a need—to visit the Ucluelet to Tofino area of Canada’s west coast. And I’m one of them. Stay tuned for the next two photos of the day; both are from Long Beach in Pacific Rim Park. And then we’ll get back to regular Salt Spring Island programming.
Circuit Board Horses

I enjoyed working with a group of wild horses this week.
This is a five foot wide commissioned piece by local artist Peter McFarlane. It needed to be shown as it might appear displayed on a wall. The piece includes a wooden cleat to help it lie flat and away from the wall. An interesting shadow is created when properly lit. This implies motion I think, and adds visual interest.
Like all of Peter’s pieces, this one is built from reused/recycled material. The circuit boards are lit so that the colour are true and the solder is alive but not shining.
I look forward to more photographic challenges like this—in the home-based studio space. During the long, dark, temperate rainforest winter. :-)
Go Leafs

Hello November.
Some rain, some wind, and suddenly the ground is covered with leaves.
