GISS Music student at ArtSpring

Someone at the local high school (Gulf Islands Secondary) asked to use this image in am upcoming course selection presentation. This was one of the hundreds of images I did for Bruce Smith (instructor) and his band of awe-inspriing performers, and one I’d overlooked as a possible for this website. So here it is. I’ve sent a message to Bruce asking in what grade the performer is. What’s your guess?

Recycle

Peter McFarlane headress from lawnmower

We’ve seen a number of original pieces created by local artists here on the site. Today I was working with some of Peter McFarlane’s newest sculptures made using reclaimed metals. There were a couple of Narwhals that I thought were pretty clever but this was today’s favourite.

It’s big. Very big. And very heavy. And I can’t think of a better reuse of mower blades.

Big Day at Salt Spring Photos

Seasonal Waterfall on Salt Spring Island

This Salt Spring Island hillside is awash with run-off from the recent rain.

And today’s post marks a watershed in the history of Salt Spring Photos. As of today, eight full years of photos have appeared on this website. Whew.

In year nine, I believe there will be some changes as I expand my photographic pursuits. Both on Salt Spring and during journeys off-island.

By necessity there will be fewer posts; there won’t be a photo every day. This should provide time needed to produce images more in keeping with the quality of my commercial images. More images like the one in this post. It was carefully captured with a medium format digital camera system that I am gradually incorporating into my workflow. Though you won’t see the detail on screen*, prints made from the original images will be stunning at very large sizes (and at smaller sizes for those of us with little available wall space :-). Think about purchasing one print during 2016; it will help offset the cost of providing this website.

The 250 or so of you who have signed up for the email notification will continue to receive an email each time a new post is created. In order to view the photo you will need to click the link.

I hope you can see the three dimensional quality and clarity in today’s image. There’s more coming, I’m looking forward to sharing the journey with you.

Abandoned, I think

January 22, 2016

Abandoned, I think

Sometimes there are signs of life around this place as it seems there’s still a bit of farming going on. But the now-drooping Christmas lights didn’t come on this year and the plastic covering the door the openings has give up the ghost. The two duck sculptures however are still on display on the lower left window ledge.
