Summer Solstice, Coastal Sunset

June 21, 2016

Summer Solstice Sunset 2016
Intense coastal colour at Chesterman Beach during the Summer Solstice.

Sunsets require you to take many digital images in your quest of getting the best image possible. And that’s what happened here. In hopes of getting the scene at it’s very best, it’s common to start when the scene is lovely and keep shooting as it gets better and better (in this case intense colour and reflection) and not stopping until the scene is visibly past its prime.

This image was taken about 30 minutes after sunset, and before the sky became too dark and dull. It’s presented as seen, and as shot—without gobs of filters or over-editing. (only a bit of contrast and a tiny bit of sharpening). At this point in the sunset, it was getting dark. Attempting to show exactly what was shot, I did not adjust the brightness.

What an amazing start to summer.

Royal Canadian Air Force Canso A 11007

Canto Crash near Radar Hill
This is the February 8, 1945 crash site of a RCAF Canso/Catalina. It’s near Radar Hill in the Pacific Rim National Park between Ucluelet and Tofino. There’s a detailed story by Dirk Septer of the crash (at this link).

Bonus:
The trail* to the crash site winds through this abandoned building:

Abandoned Building Near Radar Hill Crash Site
* as of June 2016, the ‘trail’ from the abandoned building to the crash site was extremely muddy; it’s possible to sink your foot 6 to 12 inches into the mud—I’d wear tall rubber boots with good tread if I were going today…

Jane Kidd’s Latest Tapestry

June 14, 2016

Jane Kidd latest Tapestry
This is Salt Spring artist Jane Kidd’s latest tapestry measuring approximately four feet wide by six or so feet tall. The image above is a horizontal portion of the tapestry representing about one-third of the piece (so you can see some of the details).

You may have heard that Jane recently won the prestigious Saidye Bronfman award as an exceptional craftsperson and fine crafts artist. Read more about this $25 000 award here.

* As for any artist’s work that appears on this website, Jane of course holds the copyright on this piece. I hold the copyright on the photograph.
