A Midsummer Night’s Dream

May 26, 2016

A Midsummer Night's Dream at GISS
The Acting 11/12 class performs their end-of-semester show: A Midsummer Night’s Dream this evening and tomorrow evening outside in the high school courtyard (May 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at the door).

This photo was taken as part of my business cause: performing arts at Gulf Islands Secondary school. It was made during yesterday’s dress rehearsal.

The photographic challenges were many. The rehearsal runs continuously, and while I was free to move, the actors were almost constantly moving so I was continuously unsure what would happen next. And there are no ‘do-overs.

Further, the lighting was a combination of harsh directional sunlight mixed with solid black shadows.

This makes getting a decisive moment—both realistically and technically—hugely difficult. So when the occasional image, like the one above successfully captures a moment, I count it a challenge met.

C-FLAP De Havilland Canada DHC-3 Turbine Otter

C-FLAP

SaltSpring Air and Harbour Air kicked off ‘May Long’ by treating folks on Salt Spring Island to a ‘soirée on the docks’ complete with oysters, bbq, drinks, freebies and of course a tour of the recently rebranded Otter airplane. Excellent event from first-rate folks providing superior service.

Round Saltspring Sailing Race 2016

May 21, 2016

Round Saltspring 2016 Sailing Race
10:51 at Second Sister Island

The crew aboard Westerly, a Santa Cruz 70, looks unconcerned as they enter traffic and approach the hard bump ahead (Second Sister Island).

The seven starts of this year’s race included over 100 boats, light air, grey water, flat light and grey skies. Things may liven up late this afternoon.

The fleet is taking the clockwise route (around Beaver Point, Sansum Narrows, Southey Point and Nose Point).

The winner is determined by a handicap system which attempts to give all boats an equal chance of a winning time. It often comes down to how serious and experienced the crews are, being in the right place at the right time (squeaking though Sansum Narrows before the wind dies and the tide changes can save at least 6 hours), and of course, luck! The boats have until 10:30 Sunday morning to cross the finish line.

Update: 5:30 p.m. near Nose Point (both boats will cross the finish line by 6 p.m., incredible times)

Valkarie, the Transpac 52 (rating -82) and not far behind, Westerly, the Santa Cruz 70 (rating -69)

Notes:
Thanks to Lynne for access to her piece of Salt Spring shoreline. The first photo is from ‘boulder beach’ near Price Rd. looking across Ganges Harbour to the Second Sister. This allowed a set of excellent quality images, one of which is presented here.

The second location—provided by a client—allowed both water level images and some almost straight down images (but much closer and better than aerial photos which just don’t work on such a grey day—great on sunny downwind run with spinnaker’s flying)

Race results are normally posted Sunday on the SISC race website.

GISPA On Stage at ArtSpring
In this image, GISPA is on-stage doing a final rehearsal for tonight’s opening of Pinocchio at ArtSpring Theatre. The GISPA students collectively created, composed, choreographed and developed Pinocchio under the direction of Bruce Smith (music), Sonia Langer (dance) and Jason Donaldson (theatre).

More images from the rehearsal run-through are on the SD64 website

(coincidently this dancer was featured in this previous post)
